Beyond cleantech: Rapid shift needed - Can we deliver?

Abstract

A rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is needed both to safeguard of our planet and our economy. Looking at the future of the Arctic for example, suggests that even the commitment to reduce global emissions by 50% by 2050 will not be enough and we need to look at 80% global reduction over the coming 42 years. We need to see transformational change and investments in transformational technologies that can deliver this change. It's crucial for us to move beyond thinking cleantech that is predominated by measures for incremental change.

WWF is striving to promote cutting-edge technologies with a focus on dramatic climate mitigation potential. Looking at emerging, transformational technologies gives a strong indication of the potential to reduce CO2 emissions through sustainable energy solutions. It also provides insight to the fact that these technologies are not given the support by society that is necessary to achieve global change on a large scale.

Two climate entrepreneurs with the
highest reduction potential will present their ideas. We will learn about the challenges they faced trying to sell transformational ideas to customers not used to thinking outside of the box.

We will also hear from a multinational company that introduced a transformational idea 50 years ago. How did they overcome the barriers to become a global player? What support could they have received to make their transformation faster?

In this workshop we can learn from transformative processes in the past and understand that transformational emission reductions are perfectly feasible. And economically beneficial.

Please join us and in setting up
suitable support systems for the rapid development, diffusion and implementation of the low carbon innovations that are needed to safeguard our common future!
